Bhutan isn’t just Carbon Neutral, it is Carbon Negative!

Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan says “Bhutan emits around 1.5 million tonnes of carbon annually, while its forests absorb over 6 million tonnes. This creates a deficit of almost 4.5 million tonnes of carbon.”

Over 72% of Bhutan land is currently forested and it’s legally required that no less than 60 percent of it remains forested. This is outlined in the 2008 national constitution of the country where the government pledged to protect, conserve and improve its pristine environment and safeguard the biodiversity of the country. There is a ban on export logging and trees have huge value in Buddhism.
