This International Day of the Girl Child, a day dedicated to amplifying girls’ voices and fostering
their empowerment, we recognize the critical importance of both education and environmental
preservation.
The World Bank reports that an additional year of schooling for girls can increase their future
earnings by up to 20%, highlighting the transformational power of education in breaking the
cycle of poverty. But as a community-driven tree-planting organization, how can we contribute to
girls’ education and overall community growth?
The connection between tree planting and education is stronger than you might think.
The World Economic Forum reports that closing the gender gap in education could contribute
an additional $12 trillion to the global economy. Recognizing this, our Trees+ Project is
committed to not only restore local ecosystems but also improves the lives of the people who
rely on these environments.
Trees+ : Beyond Tree Planting
The Trees+ Project is more than a reforestation effort; it’s an integrated initiative that connects
ecological rejuvenation with social progress. In collaboration with Van Panchayats (local forest
councils), we work to revitalize the forest ecosystem while empowering women in these
communities. By providing jobs in agricultural practices, we uplift local economies and improve
livelihoods. For this project, we planted more than 100,000 trees in 23 villages which will in
many ways benefit the women of the rural/forest communities.
In the Trees+ for the Himalayas project in Uttarakhand, we also addressed the financial
barriers preventing girls from accessing education. As part of the holistic approach of Trees+
projects, we provide tuition fees, school uniforms, and mentorship to girls in grades 9 to 12,
empowering them to focus on their studies and build brighter futures.
We also emphasize teaching essential life skills and providing career guidance. Through
workshops, networking, and mentorship, we help girls envision their career paths and connect
with external institutions for further education or vocational training. When girls are educated,
the entire community benefits through improved socio-economic conditions and reduced
inequality.
By combining ecological benefits with social upliftment, we ensure that communities thrive.
Building Resilient Communities Through Greenery and Growth
Just as trees form strong forests by intertwining their roots, communities grow stronger when
they support both people and nature. The United Nations emphasizes that achieving gender
equality is crucial to building resilient societies, and empowering girls is a significant step in that
direction. By planting trees and promoting education, we help create a future where greenery
and progress are intertwined.
