Reforestation – How Trees can help us achieve Net Zero

Human activities have profoundly altered the forest area across the globe. Each year,10 million hectares of forest land which is approximately the size of Iceland, are deforested. (source- un.org)

Deforestation affects us in many ways:

  • It increases carbon emissions
  • The capacity to reduce carbon capture reduces
  • It will impact millions of people who make their living in and around forests
  • It will lead to a decline in biodiversity

Why is net zero essential to tackling climate change?

Net Zero refers to the goal of eliminating the gas emissions that cause global warming entirely by offsetting their production with removal and sequestration in carbon sinks. Climate change can only be stabilised if CO2 emissions are reduced to zero. To achieve net zero, there must be a drastic reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases across all sectors of the economy.

The IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) in 2018 stated that the world needs to reach net zero by around 2050 if we need to meet the Paris Agreement Target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. India aims to reach the goal by the year 2070.

What is the solution?

Carbon dioxide is the only greenhouse gas that can be absorbed from the atmosphere. The two basic approaches to extracting carbon dioxide are either by developing a piece of machinery or by stimulating nature to absorb more.

Carbon dioxide is absorbed by plants during photosynthesis. Therefore planting more trees will yield absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. And so we can say that the easiest and the most efficacious way to tackle this is:

  • Afforestation
  • Reforestation

Reforestation

From several pieces of research, it is understood that tree planting is touted as one of the most effective means to combat climate change. At Grow-Trees.com we make planting trees easy, quick, and affordable. Our projects across the 23 states of India aim at offsetting carbon footprints, increasing biodiversity, employing local communities, and changing the overall state of the environment. You can choose to greet your loved ones with a tree for any occasion. Choose from a variety of theme-based projects like Trees for Slender Loris™, Trees for Tigers®, and Trees for Tribals™, to name a few. Indeed, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.
