The Tree of Tule

The Tree of Tule

El Árbol del Tule (or The Tree of Tule) is like a living cathedral that dwarfs the Church of the Assumption in Oaxaca, Mexico. It has the stoutest trunk of any tree in the world. The tree’s 50 foot or 15 meter diameter trunk supports branches the length of two tennis courts.

To mitigate the damage caused by car exhaust and a falling water table in 1992, the government rerouted the Pan-American Highway and approved a grant to dig a well for the tree. It is estimated to be between 1,200 and 3,000 years old.
